Context: Kiyotaka Ayanokoji enrolls in the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School, an institution where students are given immense freedom but are judged strictly on merit. Placed in the lowest-ranked Class D, he meets the aloof Suzune Horikita and the outwardly friendly Kikyo Kushida. The story uncovers the ruthless psychological warfare and point-based system governing the school, as the students fight to ascend the ranks. This first season adapts the initial cruise ship special exam and introduces the heavy manipulation happening behind the scenes.

Critical Note: The anime adaptation made significant changes to the source material, most notably replacing the character Kei Karuizawa with Suzune Horikita in several key scenes.
