Context: These two feature-length specials, Visions of a God and L's Successors, serve as a condensed retelling of the television series. They reframe the narrative, utilizing a framing device where Ryuk recounts the events of the series to another Shinigami in the Shinigami Realm.
Continuation: These are alternative recaps and do not extend the plot.
Critical Note: While primarily recaps, they include new scenes not found in the original anime, such as L's funeral and alternative dialogue. The framing device has sparked popular fan theories regarding the identity of the nameless Shinigami listener.
