Anime Original Story
Source is Anime-Original.
Context: This is the first film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy. It serves as a modern retelling of the first six episodes of the original 1995 series, covering Shinji's arrival at Tokyo-3, his introduction to NERV, and his early, harrowing battles against the Angels.
Continuation: Watch the sequel movie, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance.
Critical Note: While this first movie stays very faithful to the original series' opening arc with updated visuals, the Rebuild films are not simple remakes. They eventually diverge into a completely original storyline. It is highly recommended to finish the original 1995 series and The End of Evangelion before starting the Rebuilds to fully appreciate the changes.
Status: Finished.
